HERE IS THE LECTURE AND THE CLOSE:

Thank-you very much for inviting me. I want to present a few new ideas on stress and how you can cope with this growing problem. First of all my name is Dr. _____. I am a chiropractor practicing in _____ and I am a graduate of the ___ Chiropractic College. A large majority of my patients are more than just casual victims of stress. Now of course everyone has troubles, problems and day to day worries and concerns no matter what they do. And everyone has had one of those days when no matter what they did things just didn’t go right! Let me tell you about what happened to me. INSERT YOUR STORY..OR A STORY YOU KNOW, IN HERE..

The point is that no matter who you are or what you do you will always have problems in life. The only people with no problems are dead so if you’re having problems consider yourself fortunate! Now in dealing with problems I want you to remember a very important principle. It’s called the 80-10-10 principle! It is true of all of life’s activities whether in your occupation or your family life that 80% of the things you do will work out well, 10% will work out fair, and only 10% of the things will never, ever work out. So in projects, in your relationship with your employer, your employees, your family and friends we need to remember that if we are doing things right and in a proper, ethical way 80% of the people will approve, 10% of the people basically won’t care, and the other 10% will disapprove. If you will keep in mind that no matter how nice, no matter how friendly, no matter how efficient you are in your work place, you are going to get 80% approval, then when a negative experience occurs think: 80-10-10.and it will put everything into perspective. Using this rule can decrease the amount of stress we place on ourselves considerably.   Frankly we must realize that nobody is right all the time, with the possible exception of my wife, and the most we can do is to do our best!

Have you ever noticed that we place a higher value on negative experiences than positive ones?  We can have 10 good things happen to us throughout the day and then when one bad thing happens that’s all we can think about. When this happens to me I have to be mindful of the 80-10-10 rule. Another way of saying it is don’t let the negative few outweigh the positive many.

Now stress comes in 3 types, emotional, chemical, and physical stress. Now how many of you here are married? Okay then you know what emotional stress is! Do we really need to talk about this one? You know they say marriage is like a three ring circus, first comes the engagement ring, next the wedding ring and then comes the suffering! Now under this emotional/psychological category another way I’ve noticed that people can really stress themselves out is by watching the news all the time. You know its news in the morning, and then you read the paper and then news again at night. I was talking to a patient before her treatment and I mentioned that I was going camping that weekend with my family. She said Oh I would never do that I would be too scared. Now hearing her say that really puzzled me and got me curious. I asked her if she listened to the news a lot and she said all the time! I asked if she read the newspaper she said habitually! I told her to stop doing both for 30 days and see if she felt better. Remember 80-10-10, well news and newspapers only talk about the last ten%, the bad stuff, and they blow it up bigger than life and bombard you with it all day every day. It’s no wonder the poor lady was scared to go have a family outing. Her stress had immobilized her. Now you may not have it that bad, but watching the news all the time keeps us over informed about things we can do little or nothing about. Life can be tragic enough without us taking every bad thing in the world over the last 24hrs and then compressing it into 30 minutes news program and hearing it over and over again.  It carries over into our attitudes and perceptions of the world and can cloud them. Thoughts of fear, anger and worry all lead to negative emotional states which actually cause our bodies to secrete substances that promote aging and ill health. Positive thoughts cause our bodies to secrete chemicals that slow down the aging process and can actually bring about healing in our bodies.

That leads us into chemical stress. Chemical stress is one we don’t think much about, but it should be. Chemicals can destroy and change tissue quickly and over time and eventually lead to disability and death. Now I must confess here and now I’ve always thought of myself as somewhat bulletproof in this regard. I felt like I could eat just about anything and suffer no ill effects whatsoever. I would scoff at my wife when she started buying organic foods that cost 3 times more. I’ve never figured that out. Shouldn’t organic foods be cheaper since they don’t have to put insecticides on it? Anyway, I researching this further I am much more careful about what I put in my body. Let’s take something simple like ice cream. Tell about commercial, list ingredients. Sonic float.

Proper water intake is a very important part of the proper chemical balance in our bodies. I remember a star trek episode where they had a device that extracted all the water from your bodies and all you were left with was a little pile of chemicals. Water is not only essential for life it is absolutely essential for good health. If your choking down a few sips of water each day there is absolutely no way your body can function properly. The old standard 8 glasses a day doesn’t cut it either. If you want to know how much water your body needs in order to carry out its normal everyday functions I will give you the formula. Take your body weight and divide by two. Drink that number of ounces each day. It may take practice and you may have to work up to it. But it will pay you big dividends in health. And it’s free!

Physical stress is just that, the stress that we put on our physical bodies. Bending, lifting, poor posture, slips, falls, accidents, etc. all take their toll on our spines. Most of us don’t realize it but the most constant stress on our bodies is gravity and it is a significant stressor. It causes our spines to compress and we actually shrink, as we get older. That’s why the astronauts get taller when they’re in space.

Now I want to show you how all three forms of stress can affect your health. (Pull out spine) This is what our spine looks like from the front……When we are under stress from any one of the three forms of stress we mentioned the muscles of the spine can pull it to one side causing a curvature in the spine like this. If the curve due to stress is great enough it can impinge or choke one or more of these delicate nerves. When this condition occurs it is known as a subluxation, and I’d like for you to remember that word because this is really what a chiropractor treats. Because these nerves go to every cell, tissue and organ of your body this can cause a wide range of symptoms. Show Chart! For instance, the nerve that comes from the base of the head radiates back up into the head. If stress has caused that nerve to be pinched do you think it could cause a headache yes or yes?  As a matter of fact in my experience almost all headaches are caused by the pinching of these nerves in and around the brain stem.    Now let’s look at the area of the spine around the 6th thoracic vertebra. Lots of people have tension in the upper back between their shoulder blades, but the nerve that comes from this area not only supplies the muscles in your back but also goes to the stomach. So I want you to understand that there is a direct connection between the health of your spine and that of your stomach and of all your other organs for that matter.  Each level of the spine has a different nerve associated with it and that nerve controls another organ or set of functions in the body. When our bodies experience stress either physically, emotionally or chemically it can cause stress in our spines and directly affect our nervous system, which can cause anything from headaches and back pain to epilepsy.

So you see your organs rely on having 100% nerve flow in order for them to be healthy. Stress left unchecked can interfere with that nerve flow and result in disease. So having a healthy spine is essential to the health of the body. Now you must consider that the headaches you’re having might be related to your neck pain. Your back pain might be related to that nervous stomach or constipation.

I work with patients all day long and their most common complaint is pain, muscle pain, back pain, neck pain, but it is very common that many of the problems these people have with their organs are resolved as their back pain starts going away. I believe in giving those I come into contact with just a little more than they bargained for and that is the reason for this packet. This packet has in it a sheet that shows how misalignments in the spine can result in problems in the body. This is taken directly from Gray’s anatomy book which is the text that all medical Dr.’s use in order to graduate.  The same is true for Drs. of chiropractic.  Look this over later because you or someone you know may be trying unsuccessfully to medicate these problems away.
